Children and parents coming into any sport do so with an expectation that it should be fun and social. Playing games and becoming a member of a team is exciting for both the child and parent entering soccer. As the child progresses team sport offers so much in their development, working together, learning to win and lose, but most of all it is friendships. For many adults the friendships formed through sport can be the most important in our lives.
In many countries futsal is seen as an important way to introduce soccer to children and a separate sport from soccer. In these countries there are established programs, games and organized leagues. In Metro Vancouver this is not yet the case but it is equally acknowlendged as being a superior environment for soccer players to learn and perfect their technical skills.
Soccer in British Columbia might be behind other provinces and countries in investing in futsal but this is slowly changing. More coaches and parents are buying into the fact that futsal training is importnat in the mastering of technical skills. The great Brazilian player Zico was once asked what makes a top professional soccer player; "Three things", he replied, "Technique, technique, technique". He was clear that the mastery of fundamental ball skills were essential as a foundation for any aspiring soccer player. He identified the futsal court as being the best place to hone these skills.
So what advantages does futsal provide over conventional soccer?
The ball - a futsal has 30% the bounce compared to a regular soccer ball, but in Brazilian Futsal Academy the balls have just 10%. This makes the ball feel heavier and increases the amount of time the ball is on the floor.
Touches, the 'weighted' futsal ball stays closer to the child and so enables them to gain more touches. University studies in the UK found that a child training would gain between 6 to 8 times the number of touches during a futsal session in relation to a conventional soccer one.
Feeling the ball, the 'weighted ball' provides greater feedback to the child when they control, pass, dribble or shoot.
Space, the environment is smaller which increases the need to control and make decisions quickly. Training and playing under pressure aids the development of technical confidence, skill and soccer IQ over time.
Repetition, not only does the training allow for more touches but in game play there are more decision moments. The player may see similar problems multiple times in a game of futsal compared to far fewer for an outdoor player.
When coaches fully understand this their coaching ensures that the benefits that futsal provides are achieved. On its own Futsal is a quick game and requires fast thinking. It is a perfect environment to build technical mastery. When you add the right coaching, young players will improve their first touch, dribbling skills, and passing must quicker than their peers who are not in futsal training programs.
Why Grassroots Technical Coaching Matters in Soccer
Technical coaching focuses on teaching the basics of ball control and movement. It is about how players handle the ball under pressure. This training is where kids build confidence and skill at the same time.
When kids learn technical skills at a young age, they become increasingly confident and desire to have the ball which leads to them becoming creative in game play. These are the children that will want to learn new moves and then try these moves and tricks because they trust their ability. As their confidence continues to grow, the better they will be able to perform and enjoy the sport.
At Brazilian Futsal Academy, we use a unique approach blending Brazilian futsal techniques with fun drills and games. The aim is to keep the child engaged while learning. Our objective is to have every player become technically excellent and ready for higher levels of play to meet the challenges of playing at higher levels of soccer. Our experience is that this is a long process where each child develops at their own speed. The most important thing always remains that they should enjoy the training and have fun while playing.
Key Elements of Grassroots Technical Coaching
Good youth technical coaching covers several key areas. Each of these help build the other to create a complete player and athlete.
Ball Control: Learning to receive and control the ball with different parts of the foot and body.
Dribbling: The ability to move at different speeds with the ball while avoiding defenders.
Passing: Accurate and weighted passing to teammates with both feet and different surfaces.
Finishing: Learning how to use both feet and other parts of the body to score goals efficiently.
Movement: Positioning and moving without the ball to create space.
Body Positioning: The understanding of how to move one's body to increase success.
Coaches focus on these skills through drills and small-sided games. As much as possible these activities should be game related or recreate real game situations and help players apply what they learn and develop greater game understanding.

How to Improve Technical Skills in Soccer?
Improving technical skills takes practice and dedication. Not every child is a self starter but it is rare that a child does not want to improve at something they enjoy. Here are some tips that will help young players:
Practice Ball Control Daily: Spend 10-15 minutes each day working on ball mastery exercises like our Core Moves. Use both feet and different parts of each foot.
Use Small Spaces: Just as Futsal is played in tight spaces. Practice dribbling and passing in small areas to improve quick thinking. A wall is great for passing if you are on your own.
Play Small-Sided Games: Games with fewer players give more touches on the ball. This helps develop skills faster as well as decision-making. So at recess look for a small game rather than that one with 30 other kids.
Focus on Weak Foot: Practice everything with the weaker foot. This is a quick way to improve as a player and it also creates balance and versatility.
Watch and Learn: Watching skilled players and trying to copy their moves can be very helpful. Also film yourself - visually seeing oneself can help.
Stay Positive: Celebrate small improvements. Confidence grows with every success, while mistakes can be embraced as learning opportunities.
Parents and coaches can support by creating a positive environment. Praise effort before results. This keeps kids motivated to keep improving and is part of developing the correct mindset for a soccer player.
The Role of Brazilian Futsal Academy in Youth Development
Grassroots soccer clubs with a reliance on volunteer parents coaching cannot provide a consistent high level of technical coaching to young players, age 5 through 13. Yet these are the ages that aspiring players need master coaching and where it has the greatest impact. It is this gap in the provision of technical development that saw Brazilian Soccer Schools founded in the UK and why Brazilian Futsal Academy exists, originally as a Brazilian Soccer Schools franchise in 2013.
At Brazilian Futsal Academy, we believe that technical mastery is the key to success just as Zico stated. Our coaches are trained to deliver high-quality sessions that challenge and inspire young players. We want every child to feel they are improving, that they are proud of their skills and courageous enough to employ those skills when they play.

Tips for Parents to Support Technical Skill Growth
Parents play a big role in a child’s development. Here are some ways parents can help:
Encourage Regular Practice: Help kids set aside time for skill practice at home. We will be helping with practice plans, videos, and challenges.
Provide the Right Equipment: A good futsal ball and proper futsal shoes do make a difference.
Attend Training Sessions: Watching and supporting shows kids that you care and makes a massive difference to the child.
Promote Healthy Habits: Invest time into learning about nutrition and reinforce the truth that sleep is vitally important when it comes to recovery and performance.
Be Patient: Skill development takes years. Avoid adding pressure and try tofocus on fun.
By supporting their child’s technical growth, parents help build a strong foundation for future success. While we are discussing futsal and soccer this really applies to any aspect of a child's development in other activities and pursuits.
Building Confidence Through Ball Mastery
Confidence comes from knowing you can control the ball giving yourself the time to then make good decisions. When kids master technical skills, they feel more comfortable on the futsal court or soccer field. This confidence helps them take risks and try new things, what we often view as being brave in soccer.
Our coaches boost confidence by setting achievable goals. For example, mastering a new dribbling move or completing a juggling challenge. Celebrating these wins motivates players to keep pushing themselves. Much like different coloured belts in martial arts, Brazilian Futsal Academy has a progressive scheme where our players can work to achieve different levels in various topics of ball mastery. All of which is help the child to grow in confidence with objective valuations.
It should be mentioned that a confident player is much more able to handle pressure during games. Through their trust in their own skills, they can stay calmer and more focused. This developing mental resilience is as important as physical ability.
